In Photos: Over volcano, stunning Northern Lights show
Every cloud has a silver lining — even an ash cloud. First Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull produced a mysterious display of lightning seemingly erupting directly from the mouth of the volcano. (See the amazinglightning slide show here.) Millions of people worldwide have beenwatching the volcanic drama via webcam, AFP reports.
And now the Northern Lights have been rippling across the Icelandic sky over Eyjafjallajokull. Scientists tell the Associated Press that thesky over all of Europe is bluer because of the eruption — so startlingly clear that it has already inspired Britain's poet laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, to write: "Five miles up the hush and shush of ash/Yet the sky is as clean as a white slate/I could write my childhood there."
