Giant Magma Blobs Ripple Earth's Surface

Hot blobs of magma - the searing liquid rock beneath the Earth's crust - can spread slow-moving ripples that soar hundreds of meters high across the Earth's surface, a new study suggests.

This phenomenon, which works on geologic time scales, may explain relatively rapid pre-historical changes insea level that occurred without the typical waxing and waning of the polar ice sheets, which hold and release water on scales of thousands and millions of years. This unexplained sea level rise is one of geology's oldest mysteries.

During the Paleogene era (65 million to 23 million years ago), the land under Scotland moved up and down like a geological yo-yo. The surface rippled up to 1,640 feet (500 meters) over the course of only a million years - a relatively short time span, geologically-speaking.

"It appears to be caused by something deep within the Earth, moving sideways - almost like rats running underneath a carpet," said study author Bryan Lovell of the University of Cambridge.

The sideways movement is actually caused by what's known as convection currents in the mantle. These currents are created when the cooler, denser material in the mantle sinks and the warmer, less dense material rises.

"The hot blob would have spread out from the center of the hot spot rather like a doughnut," Lovell said.

A magma hot spot beneath Iceland, known as the Iceland plume, which is responsible for the Europeanisland's volcanic activity, could be behind this movement.

Data from oil exploration near the Iceland magma plume has revealed that a blob in the Earth's flowing mantle caused a pulse beneath the North Atlantic about 55 million years ago. This pulse raised and lowered the land surface and the sea floor in a rippling effect

Although scientists were confident that hot blobs exist in the mantle, evidence for the ripples at the Earth's surface have been hard to spot. While the Scotland uplift is the only example of the hot blob effect, Lovell said the movement is a natural effect of mantle convection, so there's no reason to think it isn't happening all the time, even now.

"I'm delighted that we have what appears to be a decent geophysical explanation for such a longstanding and significant geological problem," Lovell said. "I hope we'll be able to collect more observations from the geological record that will explain otherwise cryptic features of the Earth's mantle."

The study was detailed in the June 25 edition of the Journal of the Geological Society.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT First Media Tbk, meluncurkan layanan Sitra Wimax, koneksi jaringan internet nirkabel berkecepatan tinggi berbasis teknologi Wimax.

"Sitra Wimax siap menjadi pelopor layanan internet nirkabel super cepat dengan kualitas terbaik," kata Direktur First Media, Hengkie Liwanto, di sela softlaunch "Sitra Wimax Operator 4G Pertama di Indonesia", di kawasan Lippo Karawaci, Tangerang, Senin.

Teknologi Wimax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) adalah suatu layanan broadband internet nirkabel generasi ke empat (4G).

Wimax sendiri adalah teknologi berbasis data yang bekerja pada spektrum pita frekuensi 2.3 GHz layaknya Wi-Fi namun dengan jangkauan lebih luas dan kemampuan transmisi lebih cepat yakni mencapai 75 Mbps.

Sitra sendiri memenangkan tender Wimax untuk zona Sumatera Bagian Utara (Sumbagut) dan empat zona yang mencakup Jabodetabek dan propinsi Banten.

"Penggelaran jaringan Sitra Wimax akan dilakukan secara bertahap di kawasan barat Jakarta dan sekitarnya," kata Hengki.

Sementara itu Dirjen Pos dan Telekomunikasi Depkominfo, Budi Setiawan mengatakan, menyambut baik peluncuran Sitra Wimax.

"Kami berharap Sitra Wimax menjadi perangsang terselenggaranya layanan internet berkualitas dengan kecepatan tinggi di Indonesia," kata Budi.

Ia juga meminta Sitra mempercepat pembangunan jaringan di wilayah Sumbagut, untuk lebih mempercepat pemerataan jaringan internet di wilayah itu.

"Sitra sudah lolos uji laik operasi (ULO) untuk wilayah Jabodetabek, tinggal ULO untuk wilayah Sumbagut," kata Budi.

Terkait dengan semangat pemenuhan Tingkat Komponen Dalam Negeri (TKDN), ia menuturkan, pemerintah akan betul-betul melakukan klarifikasi sejalan dengan program memajukan industri dalam negeri.

Untuk merealisasikan TKDN tersebut, Sitra menggandeng PT Teknologi Riset Global (TRG) sebagai penyedia perangkat Wimax berupa customer premise equipment (CPE) dan base station. Pada tahap awal Sitra akan menggunakan TRG sebagai pemasok perangkat untuk wilayah Jabodetabek.

Sementara itu, Direktur TRG Gatot Tetuko mengatakan, jika mengacu pada CPE yang diproduksi maka TKDN sudah mencapai di atas 30 persen, sedangkan TKDN BTS di atas 40 persen.

"Kapasitas produksi CPE TRG bisa mencapai 5.000 unit per bulan, dan BTS mencapai 200 unit per bulan," katanya.

Ia menjelaskan, saat ini TRG memiliki tiga unit line produksi CPE dan BTS yang bisa ditingkatkan sesuai dengan permintaan pasar.

Menurut Kumaran Singaram, Sitra menargetkan dapat meraih pelanggan Wimax sebanyak 100.000-150.000 pelanggan pada tahun pertama atau Juni 2011.

"Sebanyak 500.000 pelanggan pada tahun ke tiga, serta sebanyak 1 juta pelanggan hingga April 2015," kata Kumaran.

Dubai berambisi meningkatkan perekonomian dengan memastikan statusnya sebagai poros untuk menghubungkan penerbangan Asia, Eropa, dan Afrika.

Setelah krisis keuangan global, perusahaan milik pemerintah di Dubai banyak yang menghadapi masalah dengan utang. Tapi, perusahaan-perusahaan dalam bisnis penerbangan dalam pengecualian.

Bahkan, sejumlah maskapai penerbangan Uni Emirat Arab yang telah memperkuat statusnya dalam industri. Dengan induk perusahaan, Emirates, telah memperkenalkan jet superjumbo dan memperluas jaringannya. Don't look now, but your neighbor might be building a fusion reactor, and it's perfectly legal. Check out thisstory by Matthew Danzico writing for the BBC. It's got to be one of the craziest and coolest pieces I've read in a while.

A gentleman by the name of Mark Suppes, a 32-year-old software developer, spent $35,000 on parts he bought legally on eBay and is building a fusion reactor in a warehouse in Brooklyn.

Now, let's just pause here a moment to remind ourselves the difference between nuclear fusion and fission. Fission is the splitting apart of atoms. City-annihilating bombs are based on the technology as are nuclear power plants -- both of which produce radioactive waste.

Fusion is the joining of atoms to produce energy (it's how the sun works) and so far, no one's really figured out how to do it efficiently. Oh, many-a scientist have tried, and for good reason. Fusion energy is not made with nuclear materials, such as uranium or plutonium, it does not produce CO2 or other emissions and it could make virtually unlimited energy relatively inexpensive.

The author of this piece on Gizmodo about Suppes sums up nicely.

The problem with fusion has always been that we don't know how to get more energy out of it than we put into it. We know the energy is there. We know effective fusion is likely to take a lot of energy to jumpstart, but we don't know how (or if) we can ever get fusion going well enough to capture as much energy out as we put into it -- the elusive break even point. We can't control how the energy likes to leave the reaction, and it's in forms we can't use. We can't keep the reaction self-sustaining like it is in the sun, since we don't have gravity on our side. Also, we're talking about plasma, the star-hot fourth state of matter. It tends to destroy the equipment.

Enter Suppes and other amateur physicists like him, who call themselves "fusioneers." They have a website,Fusor.net, an open-source research consortium, where people gather to share experiences and swap techniques. What Suppes is trying to do is build a Bussard Polywell fusion reactor, named after Robert W. Bussard, a physicist from Los Alamos.

Whether they have a shot at it or not is a big question, since millions of dollars is already being spent to fund fusion research in different labs around the world, not to mention ITER, the large-scale scientific experiment being built to demonstrate that producing energy from fusion is possible. And these efforts have yet to turn out a commercially viable technique that produces more energy than it uses.

But visit the Fusor website, and immediately its inspirational and motivational tone makes you believe that you can.

It says that building a reactor based on one invented in the 1950s by a Philo T. Farnsworth is "relatively simple" and employs "all the multidisciplinary techniques that fusion requires: vacuum pumping, stainless steel machining, power supply management, etc. Believe it or not, some of these devices, which really do produce fusion reactions, have been built for 'less than the cost of a set of used golf-clubs.'"

It goes on to say: "Who knows, perhaps one of the people who visit this site will learn a thing or two and go on to do what 'the experts' have been unable to accomplish."

Perhaps that person will be Suppes. Perhaps that person will be you.

A partial lunar eclipse set to occur early Saturday should look particularly stunning to observers in parts of North America thanks to an optical illusion that will make the moon look bigger than normal.

The moon will pass through part of Earth's shadow, temporarily becoming dark, starting at 6:17 a.m. EDT (1017 GMT) Saturday morning. That cosmic line-up coincides with the full moon of June and a so-called "moon illusion" that, weather permitting, should offer quite a show, according to a NASA announcement.

For observers in the central and western United States, the lunar eclipse will occur while the moon is still close to the horizon. The partial eclipse begins after the moon has set for observers in the eastern United States. (This graphic shows how the moon will appear during Saturday's three-hour partial lunar eclipse.)

Even though only 54 percent of the moon's diameter will be covered during the moment of greatest eclipse (around 7:38 a.m. EDT, 1138 GMT), the sight will appear magnified in size and charm by the "moon illusion." [Top 10 lunar eclipse facts]

Scientists aren't completely sure why, but low-hanging moons tend to look exceptionally large. When the moon beams through trees, buildings and other foreground objects close to the horizon, it often appears to be much larger than when it shines from overhead.

Even though cameras prove that low moons are no wider than any other moons, the human brain insists otherwise.

The moon will be most picturesque in the western and central parts of the United States where the moon will be setting as the eclipse reaches maximum. Viewers there should look low and to the west just before dawn to catch the best sight.

The same phenomenon will be visible to observers in India, Japan, and parts of East Asia. The eclipse will occur there on Saturday evening as the moon is rising, with the same illusion in full force. However, in the islands of the South Pacific, the moon will be hanging directly overhead in the midnight sky, so the horizon illusion won't add to the effect.

People in New England and northeastern Canada will just miss being able to see the eclipse.
